Part 2 : The Latvian Gambit
* A man, heavily dressed in a large black overcoat, is shown standing in front of a large building. He stares at it for a couple of minutes before shaking his head and going inside . The cameras follow him as he makes his way through numerous doors and entrance ways. Finally, he stops in front of a room which has ' Michael Jameson Plumbing Services ' written on it. The man takes out a key from his coat pocket and uses it to open the door. Inside, is a small hallway which leads to another room. This room is shown to be dimly lit, and is furnished very modestly. The only objects in the room are a small table and four chairs placed in the middle. The man goes into the room, and takes a seat. He takes out a cigar and starts puffing when a voice rings out from a drak corner . . . *
" Late again I see, Mr. Sidorov. "
* The man raises from his seat and moves towards the voice. He extends a hand towards a man who we see for the first time, emerging from a small entrance, hidden to one side of the room. *
" Gentlemen, what a pleasure to see you again . "
" Shut up and sit down, Mr. Sidorov. You are in....like the Americans like to say...' Deep Shit '!. "
"Oh, come on now! Why the hostility? Don't tell me that my run in with that journali.. "
" LITTLE RUN IN?! YOU SONOFABITCH! THAT LITTLE RUN IN COULD HAVE BLOWN OUR COVER! DO YOU.."
" Easy there, Comrade Fedor . Remember what the doctor said about your blood pressure. Don't blow a vein on this piece of shit! He ain't worth it! "
* Upon hearing this new voice, both men leap to their feet and stand with heads bowing down *
"I'm...I'm.....trul.....truly sorry about what happened at the press conference, Mr.Khruschev. It was a lapse on my part and...and... "
" And what, Sergei, hmm? And what? it won't happen again? That's the same crap you gave me last time! Why should I believe you now? "
* Sidorov's voice falls to that of a squeal as he continues to protest *
"It wasn't as if I planned it or anything, Mr. Khruschev. It just happened. That journalist was disobeying orders, and so I..I.."
" Wait! Let's see. That journalist wasn't obeying your men, and so you......order to have the living shit beaten out of him? You order your men to kill him........in view of dozens of fucking mediapersons?! What the hell is wrong with you, Sergei? Your actions of late make me feel as if Fedor and I were wrong in choosing you as the man for this mission. Maybe we should have appointed Comrade Rubichev instead, hmm..."
* Sidorov's eyes gleam with anger as he gets up from his seat *
" Ha! Comrade Rubichev wouldn't last for five minutes in the ring with anyone other than Bugs Bunny! He is a pathetic excuse of an operative!"
" Bugs..who? "
" You won't understand, Fedor."
* Fedor's voice moves up a couple of decibels and he starts shouting *
" You son of a swine?! You dare address your superior officer by name? I shall have you dismissed!."
" Calm down, Comrade. Don't let him get to you. "
* He turns to Sidorov *
" I request you to sit down, Sergei. We need to discuss your future course of action."
" Discuss my WHAT?! You said I was in charge of all tactical maneuvering in this mission.
" Well, that is before you started carrying out public executions. Do not argue with me, Sergei. This is for your own good. We cannot risk exposure, certainly not at this moment in time. ."
* Sidorov sits down dazed, and clutches his head in his hands *
"Come on, Cheif. One more chance! I promise I won't mess up again!"
" Enough, Sergei! Do not interrupt me. The high command have decided to make a radical change to the course of action that is to be taken in the following weeks. We will now no longer be concentrating our activities in New York. We have it from very good sources that the FBI is slowly but surely closing in on us. So we need to put them off our tracks. Therefore, we have decided to implement ' The Latvian Gambit '."
* Sidorov jumps up in surprise and bangs on the table with both his hands. His chair falls to the ground with a crash, and Fedor lets out a chuckle .*
" HAVE YOU GONE NUTS?! THE LATVIAN GAMBIT?! IT'S WAY TOO RISKY!!!
" Well, that may be the case, but high risks yield high returns, Sergei. If it succeeds, no one will be able to stop us in our mission."
* Sidorov is now pacing up and down the room as his two superior officers look on with bemused expressions on their faces *
" Comrade Khruschev, you cannot be serious. The Latvian Gambit is suicidal. It is going to involve taking a lot of risks, and I can bet you that no one on the force is going to be willing to undertake The Gambit. No way!
* Fedor and Khruschev glance at each other and they both get up from their seats. Khruschev walks towards Sidorov and puts an arm around his shoulder.*
" I will not take you up on that bet, Sergei, for I'm sure to win.
" What? So you're telling me that someone is willing to undertake The Gambit? Who the fuck is so stupid?!"
" You are.
" I beg your pardon."
" You are, Sergei. You're going to be the Knight in The Gambit.
" Me? No way! I ain't doing it! "
" I am afraid you have no choice, Sergei."
" What...what do you mean? "
" Tsk tsk....Fedor, please elucidate so that our friend here can understand. "
" Look, Sidorov. The High Command is deeply unhappy with your performance, and are on the verge of suspending you. Now, we've been asked to evaluate you, and submit a report tomorrow. We've also been asked to find a Knight for The Gambit. So basically, what we're going to do is kill two birds with one stone. We're going to submit a positive report tomorrow, and you're going to return the favor by assuming position of The Knight. "
" No...no! I won't do it! You can't force me! NO! "
" Sergei, please don't throw a fit. No one is forcing you to do anything. You're free to refuse the position of The Knight. "
" I...I...am?"
"He is?"
" Yes, of course. However , I hope you're prepared to face the High Command when they haul you up for your misdemeanours . "
" WHAT?! WHY? "
" I mean, when we write in our report that you've been quite uncooperative, not to mention downright brash and arrogant, they will be mightly displeased."
" NO! Don't do that! Please, I beg you! I'll do anything. Please! "
* Khruschev signals to Fedor and Fedor takes a piece of paper out of his pocket and places it on the table. Both the superior officers put their coats on, and move towards the entrance way. Fedor dissappears down the hallway while Khruschev turns to face Sidorov again.*
" I trust you to make the right call. Good night, Sergei."
* Sidorov has a blank expression on his face, and he begins to read through the paper that Fedor placed on the table. After a couple of seconds, he drops the paper to the ground, and drops down to the floot clutching his head in his hands. The camera zooms in onto the paper that he dropped, and we see the contents of the paper.*
* Sidorov begins to sob softly as it begins to rain outside. The camera focuses on The Knight in the paper as the scene fades away *.
OOC : Don't ask me the background for this character, it's way too hard to explain. ;D
He's sort of a Russian hitman who's fucked up way too many times, and now he's been caught between a rock and a hard place.
