The promo begins with a television set facing the camera, static filling the screen and white noise assaulting the senses. The camera zooms in slowly as the lights behind it are turned off, the television now the only source of light to be seen. Suddenly, the screen judders to life and a commercial for a cooking show plays briefly before someone off camera changes the channel. This happens a few times, the images flicking by as barely recognisable actors promote cheap merchandise; interspersed with various TV shows before it finally settles on a channel for longer for more than a few seconds.
The television set shows a woman exiting a court room as a swarm of paparazzi buzz around her relentlessly. Beside her a lawyer holds his briefcase over his client’s head and the two shield themselves from the camera flashes as they push through the crowd. Eventually they climb into a waiting car as a familiar face is marched from the courtroom behind them. He is flanked by two police officers has been handcuffed. The figure suddenly becomes recognisable as Rhaps and he is dragged bodily, a newscaster speaking over the footage as it plays.
Newscaster: The Former Wrestler, Richard Adam Parsons, who wrestled under the name of Rhaps was found guilty of three counts of murder in the first degree and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The key witness for the prosecution was a Doctor who worked in a mental health facility, Dr Hannah Livingstone and she was instrumental in dismissing the defence’s insanity plea.
The screen on the television flicks again and this time more archived news footage is shown. This time it shows Police amassing outside of a Police Station while a negotiator hovers anxiously to one side. In the doorway Rhaps is seen once more and he is standing behind another officer, a knife at the man’s throat. Many guns are pointed at the wrestler as he holds the policeman close to him, standing behind the man with a monstrous grin on his visage. As they slowly back into the building, Rhaps leans close to his hostage and whispers something in his ear, which causes the man to suddenly go grey as the colour drains from his face.
Newscaster: This has been a sensational development in the story of the former wrestler Richard Parsons. After being found guilty in a highly publicised trial the convicted felon somehow escaped his prisoner escort. Just hours later he entered the Sacramento Police Department where he took several hostages and a standoff with police lasted several hours. Finally, a SWAT team was called in and they found several victims had been brutally stabbed with one in critical condition but the suspect had fled by some unknown means and still remains at large.
The television set changes channel again and more news footage is shown. It shows a reporter on a news channel reporting on a developing story. A picture of the judge that presided over Rhaps’ trial is in the corner. The reporter keeps talking in a professional manner but this veneer fades just for a moment, long enough for the audience to witness a grimace as he reports on the details of the story. As he talks the image of the judge is replaced with one of the key witness, Dr Hannah Livingstone.
Reporter: Another stunning development in the case of the wrestler, turned wanted felon Richard Parsons. Today the bodies of Maria Jenkins and Doctor Hannah Livingstone were found, the judge and key witness in the Richard Parsons trial respectively. They had been brutally stabbed and the investigating police officer described the scenes as monstrous. Sacramento Police are calling on any witnesses to step forward if they have any information that could lead to the capture of the suspect.
The scene on the television changes again. This time it shows CCTV footage from inside a police station. Two detectives walk down a corridor as other officers mill about and walk by, paying the two of them little attention. Some audio can be heard between the detectives but it is grainy and difficult to hear what is being said with accuracy.
First Detective: We need to catch this sick son of a bitch. He showed up at my house and attacked my wife.
Second Detective: Shit! Is she ok? Can she ID the bastard?
First Detective: No, the psycho was wearing a mask but I’m sure its Rhaps. He carved an R into each of her cheeks. It’s his signature.
Second Detective: We need to stop him.
First Detective: I know. But there’s a problem. We have DNA evidence but now there’s no way to make a match to Rhaps. Somebody hacked the national DNA database and deleted the file and somebody broke in to the lab and destroyed the crime scene samples. So even if we catch the bastard, there’s no way to link him to these new crime scenes.
Second Detective: Shit! We’ll find a way. Don’t worry.
The television screen changes one more time. As before it has switched back to the reporter sitting in the studio and he has obviously aged and is wearing a new suit. He reads a couple of the top headlines before it switches to a picture of Rhaps in the corner. The reporter immediately begins talking animatedly as he speaks.
Reporter: The whereabouts of Richard Adam Parsons is still unknown It has been two years since the judge in the former wrestler’s trial was found murdered and apart from a few reported sightings, there have been no verified sightings of the wanted felon for eighteen months. It is believed that the fugitive has long since fled the Sacramento area and the FBI have widened the search.
The television is abruptly turned off and the screen goes blank. A reflection can be seen and a deep throaty laugh is heard as the face draws closer to the screen and the features become more defined. Rhaps’ reflection laughs maniacally before the television is kicked over. Rhaps comes into view and drops to his haunches in front of the camera, his manic features more deranged than ever. He holds a blood-stained knife up to his face and proceeds to lick the blade clean. He closes his eyes and shivers in delight as he does so, getting some perverse pleasure from it. Off screen, soft whimpers can be heard and muffled cries as if there is someone else in the room.
Rhaps finishes cleaning the blade and looks forward, his breathing slow and calm. His eyes are bloodshot and various scars and cuts are dotted all over his face, as if the wrestler had taken to turning the blade on himself. Here and there some of the marks resembles tallies and Rhaps runs his hands over the healed wounds as he closes his eyes, silently rejoicing in the ritual. Finally, the lunatic speaks.
Rhaps: These pathetic people that get in the way want to believe the world makes sense, that they can exist in a cocoon of safety and live free from fear. They learn to fear the abyss; staring into that inky blackness and fearing that something is watching them from the darkness. Rhaps is different from these sycophants. He doesn’t just stare into that abyss, he’s not satisfied until it recoils in horror. These are just glimpse of the latest chapters of Rhaps’ story. Does anybody want to see what happens next?
As Rhaps stops talking he turns the knife around in his hand. He stares at it hungrily for a few moments until he drags the blade across the bridge of his nose, a thin line of blood dribbling from the wound. Rhaps quivers at the touch of the blade and his body shudders in ecstasy. He cuts himself a few more times, shaking joyfully as he continues the scarification ritual. In the background, the soft moans have turned into screams of muffled terror.
Rhaps: This is far from over. EVPW hasn’t seen the last of Rhaps. The next chapter starts today.
Rhaps disappears from view and laughter echoes around the room as the screen goes black. The horrific noise increases in volume and is suddenly interspersed with yells of pure agony. This drags on for a few more seconds before the audio is lost.
